EXPLANATION OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS
1 – SÃO ROQUE. – The LIVRO DO COMPROMISSO of the Misericórdia de Lisboa,
to whom the Church of São Roque and its Museum belong, is an Évora
manuscript dating back to 1520, and a remarkable one in its kind, as may
be seen from the illuminure which the illustration shows.
2 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE CHURCH, built in the second half of the sixteenth
century and designed by Filippe Terzi, was rebuilt in the eighteenth
century after the great earthquake in 1755. The Misericórdia de Lisboa
occupies the other part of the building.
3 – SÃO ROQUE. – INTERIOR OF THE CHURCH, a single-nave one, finely
decorated in golden woodwork, and as finely decorated in marbles, glazed
files and Florentine mosaics. The wooden ceiling, painted in 1588, is
considered a fine sample of the work of the period.
4 – SÃO ROQUE. – CHAPEL OF ST. JOHN THE
BAPTIST, made in Rome in 1742 by order of King John V. A wonderful and
harmonious whole in which the best Italian artists of the time are
jointly revealed.
5 – SÃO ROQUE. – ALTAR OF THE CHAPEL OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST. In the
background the BAPTISM OF CHRIST, a priceless mosaic by Mattia Moretti,
based on a model expressly painted by the famous Massuççi.
6 – SÃO ROQUE. – CHAPEL OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST. – The mosaic which
decorates the lintel on the Epistle side. It shows the Annunciation, and
was expressly painted by Massuççi and executed in the workshops of
Mattia Moretti.
7 – SÃO ROQUE. – CHAPEL OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST. – A picture in mosaic
which decorates the lintel on the Gospel side. – It shows the Pentecost.
The execution is by Moretti on a model by Massucci.
8 – SÃO ROQUE. – CLANDLESTICK of the Chapel, in
gilt bronze, wrought by Angelo and Giuseppe Ricciani. The three branch
lamps, in silver and gilt metal, are the work of Simone Migli, the
Italian goldsmith.
9 – SÃO ROQUE. – ONE OF THE SIDE DOORS of the Chapel, in gilt bronze,
with King John the Fifth's monogram. It was executed by Silvestre Doria.
The jambs are in old green, with hard jasper and small amethyst insets.
10 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – One of the rooms, containing furniture
and objects of the cult, belonging to the Misericórdia de Lisboa. It is
one of the finest collections of sacred art all the world over. In the
background the altar shown in fig. 11 and Gagliardi's two famous torch
sticks, one of which is shown in fig. 12.
11 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – The altarpiece
in silver and lapis-lazuli which was used on special occasions; it is
the work of Antonio Arrighi. The bas-relief in the middle is based on a
passage of Revelation.
12 – SÃO ROQUE. – MUSEUM. – One of the two monumental torch sticks
wrought by the goldsmith Giuseppe Gagliardi. These have no parallel
anywhere. Each is 9 feet high and weighs about 900 pounds.
13 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – View of part
of the base of one of the monumental torch sticks. Under the Portuguese
Royal Arms one of the Christian Fathers is seated.
14 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – «The Virgin and the Child», a curious
and valuable Gothic sculpture, in silver. It is held to be the work of
an unknown Portuguese artist. / 18 /
15 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – One of the small altar-pictures in gilt
silver, a most remarkable work by Antonio Vendetti. It weighs nearly 13
lbs. In the upper medallion St. John the Evangelist, in the lower a
pelican.
16 – SÃO ROQUE – THE MUSEUM. – A gilt silver
ewer richly wrought by Vicenzo Belli. The handle is a woman's body. The
ewer and plate weigh about 9 lbs.
17 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – A reliquary urn
containing relics of St. Valentine. In the medallions at the base scenes
from the saint's martyrdom. By Carlo Guamieri.
18 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – A purifier, with
cover and plate, in gilt silver, with rich ornaments. It weighs about 3
lbs. and was the work of Antonio Gigli. It has rare artistic value.
19 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – A ship-shaped incense-box, bearing alt
the Portuguese arms, held up by two angels. The sitting figure holds up
a chalice. The base is a sea motif. By Antonio Gigli.
20 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – «Monumento»,
a silver coffer meant to hold the Host on Holy Thursday. This is a work
of high artistic value and the small angel figures are particularly
remarkable.
21 – SÃO ROQUE – THE MUSEUM. – Vessels and
plates, in gilt silver, with fine ornaments in the middle and near the
lips. By Antonio Gigli.
22 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – Plate of the
ewer in fig. 16. By Vicenzo Belli. In the four medallions: St. John
preaching in the desert, St. Peter receiving the keys, the
multiplication of loaves, and Jesus appearing to St. Mary Magdalen.
23 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – Curtain to cover the altar-picture on
Holy Week. By Filippo Gamelli. Embroidered in gold, in relief, on a
peacock-tail background, and representing the instruments of the
Passion.
24 – SÃO ROQUE. – THE MUSEUM. – A rich white
cape, embroidered in gold, in relief. The mitre is set with precious
stones. The whole is of a rare magnificence and beauty.
